Mahakumbh 2025: 100 FR cameras to be installed at railway stations in Prayagraj

Nov 06, 2024

Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) [India], November 6 : In preparation for the upcoming Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government is prioritising the safety and security of devotees by equipping Prayagraj railway stations with advanced surveillance technology. For the first time, 100 facial recognition (FR) cameras are being installed alongside CCTV cameras.
These FR cameras, powered by artificial intelligence, are highly effective in monitoring suspicious activities and identifying potential threats. Approximately 10 crore people are expected to travel by train during Mahakumbh, prompting special security arrangements by the Prayagraj Railway Division.
Amit Singh, PRO of the Prayagraj Railway Division, stated that AI-based FR cameras are being installed as part of broader security measures to ensure a safe and smooth experience for devotees and tourists. These cameras can recognise faces using AI technology, allowing them to identify suspects even within large crowds. This capability aids in preventing suspicious activities and controlling crowd situations before they escalate.
Singh further explained that, in addition to 650 CCTV cameras, 100 FR cameras will be installed across the railway stations in Prayagraj for the first time. The routes, shelters, and platforms of all nine railway stations within Prayagraj city will be monitored.
These security installations are set to be completed by the end of December, with all equipment operational by January, ahead of Mahakumbh's commencement.
