Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], September 21 : Madhya Pradesh Police registered a case against an unidentified person in connection with a cyber crime that occurred impersonating Bhopal Collector via social media platform, an officer said on Saturday.
The accused had messaged the complainant over Whatsapp messenger posing as Bhopal Collector Kaushlendra Vikram Singh and demanded money. The accused had also put up the Bhopal Collector's photo as a profile picture of the Whatsapp account.
"Cyber crime cases are seen in new forms these days. Fraudsters are adopting new methods through social media platforms which include Facebook, Instagram, telegram and whatsApp and cheat people. Sometimes they posed as celebrities, sometimes common citizens and sometimes as administrative officers. Recently, a case has come to light in which whatsApp message was sent in the name of Collector Bhopal and committed cyber crime," said Shailendra Singh Chouhan, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Crime Branch Bhopal.
The complainant has lodged a complaint regarding the incident and prompt action has been taken into the matter. The police started an investigation and soon exposed the matter, he said.
"We have found a few things in the case that the person on whose name the SIM card is registered, does not own that WhatsApp account. We have verified it and we will expose the matter soon after getting technical details," Chouhan added.
When asked what message was sent through to the complainant, the officer said that the content was not important but the matter of concern was that the message was sent in the name of an administrative official.
"We are investigating the number we have received. We will further seek information regarding this from WhatsApp and arrest the main accused," he added.
