Floods and Landslides Devastate Nepal’s Kavrepalanchowk

Kavrepalanchowk (Nepal), Oct 02 (ANI): Disconnected from the outside world since last week due to the destruction of roads and electricity infrastructure, the residents of Panauti Municipality now face a grim future. The majority of houses, except for a few, have been destroyed by the raging waters of the Roshi River, which continues to roar. This roaring sound has left the locals in a state of fear, worried that another disaster might strike before they can return to normalcy. According to the Armed Police Force (APF), the death toll from the rain-induced disaster since last Saturday has risen to 241, with 29 people still missing. Heavy rainfall since September 26 caused widespread floods and landslides, sweeping through Parbati's paddy field and inundating her house, forcing her family to flee for their lives. She has now returned home, salvaging through the debris. Not everyone in Kavrepalanchowk has been as fortunate as Parbati. About five kilometers from Bhumidanda, Sarita Dahal of Chhaptole has lost everything. The disaster claimed 20 lives in Panauti alone, with 500 houses destroyed and 713 more partially damaged. Over 2,000 livestock were lost to the floods and landslides. Roads and access routes have been destroyed, and hundreds of acres of land ready for harvest have been wiped out. Paddy fields have turned into barren embankments filled with boulders and stones.
