J&K: Girls of Ashtangoo village keeping traditional carpet weaving alive

Bandipora (J&K), Sept 15 (ANI): The girls of Ashtangoo village in Bandipora of Jammu and Kashmir are playing a major role in manufacturing of Kashmiri carpets and have kept the industry alive for future generations. The Ashtangoo village is known for manufacturing of Kashmiri carpets and unique style of weaving. Kashmiri carpets are also famous in the world due to its unique weaving and quality material. It has always attracted the customers especially foreign tourists during peak season. But for last thirty years due to uncomfortable atmosphere, Kashmiri art especially carpet industry has faced a lot of issues and artisan community is struggling to earn their livelihood. These girls demanded that for the promotion of the carpet industry, the government should provide them with some special incentives so that more girls will be interested towards this work and the carpet industry will be stable. Ashtangoo village is one of the most beautiful places of Bandipora district where Asia’s largest water body namely Wular lake is situated. The lake is almost seventy-five kilometres from Srinagar and attracts a good number of visitors every year.
