Muslim auto-rickshaw driver defies curfew to help newborn’s family in Assam

May 16, 2019

Hailakandi (Assam), May 16 (ANI): In a humane and courageous gesture, a Muslim auto driver helped a Hindu woman and her newly born baby to reach home safely during curfew in Assam’s Hailakandi. The incident took place on May 12 when the curfew was imposed in Hailakandi following communal clashes. During curfew, a child was born and no vehicles were available to take the child home. Father of the newborn, Ruben Das, called his friend Maqbool, who is an auto driver for help. Unfazed by religious differences during the curfew, Maqbool stood by his friend and took the risk of facing police during curfew and dropped family home. The child has been named ‘Shanti’. The incident is an apt example of communal harmony in the country.
