PIL filed in Gauhati HC challenging transportation of 4 elephants to Gujarat

Guwahati (Assam), Jun 25 (ANI): Gauhati High Court on Monday took up a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by animal activists challenging Assam government’s decision to transport four juvenile elephants from Tinsukia to Ahmedabad in Gujarat. The petitioners contended that the state government’s decision was in violation of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, and relevant orders of the Supreme Court in this regard. Assam Forest Department’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Sailen Pandey told ANI that the Gauhati HC found that an interim Supreme Court had already ordered states that elephants shouldn’t be transported from one state to another; however, since the SC order was in respect to Kerala, the HC has asked the central government to clarify whether the SC order would also be applicable in Assam.
