Sivaganga (TN), October 22 (ANI): The residents of Kollukudipatti & Vettangudipatti villages in TN’s Sivaganga stopped bursting firecrackers decades ago to protect local wildlife. The villagers prioritized the welfare of migratory birds in the nearby Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary. Once frequent visitors to the Vettangudipatti waterbody, these birds migrated to Kollukudipatti due to disturbances in original habitat. Currently, they inhabit 13.6 hectares within the sanctuary and utilize three water bodies across both villages. The decision to avoid firecrackers was made collectively by the villagers long before the establishment of the sanctuary. Their commitment to preserving natural habitat has been passed down through generations, with younger community actively embracing tradition. This season, more than 10,000 migratory birds have arrived in the area, highlighting positive impact of villagers’ actions on wildlife. The community’s dedication serves as a model for environmental stewardship, demonstrating that cultural celebrations.
